fasting

Decided it was time for me to post something, even if it not really much. I must, at least, say hi. Hi. Got a question for you fine feathered friends: What's your experience and opinion and understanding on fasting? Eh?

  1. do it if you want to, but don't do it to get stuff outta God.........heh heh!!

here's a question, did Paul ever fast? or any of the New Covenant, does it talk about fasting? We know Jesus fasted but he was born under the law, so I question why he fasted. Anyway, great topic to get some discussion on.

Hope you are well!! Hi right back at you and yours!!

  2. 1Co 7:5 Do not deprive one another, unless it is with consent for a time, so that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer. And come together again so that Satan does not tempt you for your incontinence.

That is the only place i came across it. . .

When i have looked at it when Jesus talked about it, it seemed linked to increasing faith.

  4. Wasn't Peter fasting when he fell into a trance and saw the big sheet with all the 'unclean' animals on it? Or was he just very hungry?

  5. I think it gets used to twist God's arm, unfortunately. People say, "Fast and seek the LORD." And Jesus is waving His arms saying, "I'm RIGHT HERE!"

As a means of "focusing" your mind and thoughts, sure. If I choose to skip a meal, that is between me & God, but for people or churches to make a BIG, PUBLIC spectacle of it? No, I think that is incorrect.

    Hey, you!! :)

  6. Ha ha Matthew. That is funny. Now I am curious. . .

I agree Jamie. I believe it can totally be done in a manipulative selfseeking spirit. I am just wondering as there seems to be a connection to fasting somehow causing a form of increased sensitivity to Him. It's good to "see" you. . . !

  7. I have heard Rob Rufus talk about fasting to sensitize your spirit........makes total sense to me. Do you guys think fasting can be fasting from things other than just food???? Anything that would help you from being distracted from just letting yourself be focused on him? Thoughts?

  8. Fasting was always so slooooow for me. :) Haha! But yeah, I think it's more a soulful issue than a spiritual issue. It's not the lack of food or a fleshly-based self-denial that fasting is about, but a part of an overall time of a more-focused mind renewal?

  10. I think it's just related to how you feel in the new covenant. If you've got something on you mind or heart that makes you want to skip a meal, then yes.

If like in the 1Cor7 passage one or both of two people have got some emotional need or spiritual desire or issue where it wouldn't feel appropriate, loving, sensitive to give themselves to intimacy together, then that's the only time not to.

    Just my thought.
